The stuff of legend, ladies and gentlemen. On this Earth Day I’ll pause to celebrate illumination in all the many forms that it comes to us. Our planet’s relationship to light, the consistent power of the sun, our dependence on its precious resource. May it continue to burn bright for us and dapple through our windows each morning to keep us inspired. #earthday2018 🌞🌍
Detail of the ancient Mayan citadel of Tikal in the rainforests of northern #Guatemala. The civilization flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later mysteriously abandoned. Tikal, Guatemala, 2006. I can still hear the howler monkeys at dawn waking up the jungle.
Trujillo, Peru - I work on an eye hospital that crosses oceans at 34K feet. Right now, back in rural Peru. Image above from a story on congenital pediatric glaucoma and the burdensome ripple effects of #blindness on family and community. Left undetected and untreated glaucoma deteriorates vision and can forge a swift path to irreversible sight loss. I met up with Giancarlo in his home one year after a minuscule drainage device was implanted in his eye to relieve his ocular pressure. Like most children he was shy with a playful energy just under the surface, ready in a moment to throw his worries to the wind. For many like him, a life of glaucoma treatment is a desperate attempt to salvage what remains of their vision. It is often an uphill battle that lasts a lifetime. When I first met him in 2014, Giancarlo depended on a Braille machine to stay on top of his schoolwork. Through thick glasses he needed to put a cellphone within an inch of his face to read numbers. For now, he’s relieved that blindness is being held at bay.
Not in the hands of children. Somewhere near the border of south Sudan and Ethiopia. I remember the driver of our Toyota Hi-Lux suddenly hitting the brakes so I could jump out and meet this fellow with his hand-carved AK-47. The image always makes me wonder where this boy is now.

Women’s Day should be every day. A rural farmer prepares freshly harvested pumpkin leaves to make chibwabwa, a staple green for many west Africans cooked with ground nut and oil. Luanshya, Zambia 2012. #internationalwomensday #womenrise #zambians #realfood #onassignment #insta_africa
Of the qualities I admire most in kids living in challenging environments throughout the world is their embedded resilience and capacity for good times in the moment. Dhapa, Kolkata, 2011.
